People living with muscle disease in north Wales called for urgent improvements to neuromuscular services at the North Wales Conference in Wrexham on Friday 25 February.

Addressing the conference were Wrexham AM, Lesley Griffiths, and Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board Chief Executive, Mary Burrows. Responding to recommendations in the Cross Party Group on Muscular Dystrophy’s Thomas Report, Mary Burrows announced the recruitment of a neuromuscular Care Advisor for north Wales and development of a North Wales Neuromuscular Network.

Families from across north Wales made it clear that it is essential for improvements to take place quickly to ensure that gaps in specialist care are effectively fixed, particularly in care co-ordination, specialist physiotherapy provision and wheelchair services.

Mary Burrows acknowledged that the process of implementing service improvements had been too slow and vowed to address families’ concerns.
