Disability activists call for ‘Responsible Reform’

Today, a group of disability activists from across the UK have published a report which outlines the level of opposition to the Government’s proposals to replace Disability Living Allowance (DLA) with the Personal Independence Payment (PIP).

The group of campaigners, which includes social media activists @suey2y and @BendyGirl, researched, wrote and funded the publication of the report – Responsible Reform – which analysed the responses the Government received to its consultation on DLA reform and found the majority of the respondents were overwhelmingly against the proposed changes. The report underlines the vital importance of social security to disabled people’s quality of life and argues that those in receipt of the lower levels of support from DLA could be particularly at risk of losing their only source of financial support if the proposals are enacted in their current form.

This is an important report, which underscores the argument that any reforms to DLA must be fully thought through and have a strong base in the needs and real-life experiences of disabled people.

You can read the report in full online.
